Data Erasure
Sanitize supported laptops, desktops, servers, mobile devices, and storage media through documented workflows aligned with NIST SP 800-88 guidelines, with serialized reporting and exception handling available by project scope.
For organizations retiring IT assets by appointment — not consumer drop-off or single-device service.
Assets are received and brought under documented chain of custody before any handling begins.
Each device is logged and, where scoped, captured at the serial level for reconciliation and reporting.
The appropriate sanitization method is selected for the media type using third-party sanitization tools.
The erasure process runs against the device following methods aligned with NIST SP 800-88 guidelines.
Results are verified to confirm the sanitization completed successfully on that device.
The outcome is recorded against the device, producing the underlying data for reporting.
Media that fails or is unsupported is routed to secure hold, return, recycling or destruction paths.
NIST SP 800-88 is published guidance for media sanitization, not a vendor certification. Our workflows follow those guidelines; we do not describe them as “NIST certified” or “NIST compliant.”
When a device cannot be reliably sanitized, it is handled through one of these paths:
Logical sanitization can preserve resale and recovery value when your policy permits, keeping working devices in service rather than scrapping them. When media has failed, carries elevated risk, or is restricted by policy, physical destruction is the more appropriate route. We recommend the right approach for each device based on its condition and your requirements.
Data erasure often sits inside a larger disposition project. When you need more than sanitization, we can add scheduled pickup, device resale and value recovery, R2v3 recycling, and full closeout reporting under one chain of custody. For eligible fleets with sufficient resale value, a Clean Sweep Buyout can turn retirement into recovered value.
We use third-party sanitization tools and select the method appropriate to each media type, following methods aligned with NIST SP 800-88 guidelines. NIST SP 800-88 is published guidance for media sanitization, not a vendor certification, so we describe our work as aligned with those guidelines rather than certified to them.
Solid-state and flash media are handled with methods appropriate to that media type rather than techniques designed for magnetic drives. Where a device supports a suitable sanitization command it is used and verified; where a drive cannot be reliably sanitized, it is routed to secure hold, approved return, or physical-destruction handling by scope.
Yes. Certificates of erasure and serial-level records are available, with the reporting depth matched to your project scope and compliance requirements. Let us know what your policy or auditors require and we will confirm the reporting level during the assessment.
Most projects are sanitized at our facility under documented chain of custody. Onsite needs can be discussed during scoping and are handled by project scope; send your requirements and we will confirm the right path before any work begins.
Failed or unsupported media is never quietly passed along. It is reattempted where appropriate, then routed to secure hold, approved return, recycling, or physical-destruction handling depending on your policy and the project scope.
Erasure is scoped by volume, media type and reporting needs. arcITAD serves organizations retiring IT assets by appointment — it is not a consumer drop-off or single-device service. Send your asset list or approximate counts and we will determine the appropriate path.
Timing depends on device count, media types and the depth of reporting required. We confirm an expected turnaround during the assessment once the scope is understood.
Send your asset list or approximate counts and we will recommend the right sanitization methods, exception handling and reporting level for your project.
